July 13: Chelsea City Council sets community listening session

The Chelsea City Council unanimously approved a Zoom community listening session with the chief of police, the mayor and city council for Monday, July 13 beginning at 6 p.m. at its meeting Monday night.

(To listen to the whole meeting, please click here.)

The proposal was made by Council Member Jane Pacheco who read the explanation of her agenda item, “It is our desire for everyone to feel safe and included in Chelsea. In light of recent events involving the Chelsea Police Department, it is more important than ever for civic leaders to do everything in our power to examine and reform institutional systems to be sure they promote the well-being of all of our community members.”

She wrote, “for a portion of our community, public trust has been broken. We need to acknowledge that harm has been done and then do work to repair it. The Chelsea Police Department prides itself on its philosophy of community policing, the strong culture of respect in the department, and the importance of community relationships. The CPD cannot do its job well if they do not have the trust of the community.”

The goals of the work session are:

  1. for community members to express their experiences with and insights about law enforcement.
  2. to take questions and hear comments, with respect for different points of view, about who is feeling unsafe, unheard, or excluded in our community.
  3. to make space to hear from community members about what kind of community we want to be and what community policing could mean to us.

Once people have had a chance to express their opinions a follow-up public session will be held to discuss next steps.

(Council Member Charles Wiseley was absent from the meeting. )
