July 26-27: Chelsea Art Market redefined, featuring unique demos

Chelsea Art MarketThe Chelsea Art Market redefines its atmosphere this year with cool, hip and affordable art from emerging artists and craft persons.

The juried show coincides with the Sounds & Sights Festival on July 26-27 from noon-8 p.m. and is located at West Middle Street in downtown Chelsea.

This year marked the largest number of applicants for the Chelsea Art Market, and 35 artists were selected to sell their wares at the 2013 event.

“We wanted to generate a fresh indie-vibe for the Art Market this summer, so we actively sought out modish exhibitors with a fresh edge,” said Patti Schwarz, art market program coordinator and Director of River Gallery + Exhibits, in a press release.

“We invited two young, successful artists and exhibitors, Helen Gotlib and Dylan Strzynski of Tiny Expo, to consult with us about outreach, marketing and jurying,” Schwarz said, adding, “Throughout the jury process, we stayed focused on our vision and kept our craftsmanship standards high.”

All artists participating in the Chelsea Art Market are from the Midwest.

Various mediums will be represented – including woodblock prints by Marion Short, Regina Pruss’ modern jewelry made from vintage materials, William Nardin’s exotic wood boxes, and hand sewn shoes and accessories by Sarah Couyoumjian.

Spectators also have the opportunity to watch downtown street artists as they demonstrate techniques in clay, glass, copper foil, jewelry making, painting, and wood carving.

One of the more unique demonstrators, Whalen and Shimmin Traveling Tintypists, will be creating one-of-a-kind tintype images using traditional methods.

In addition to the Chelsea Art Market, visitors can explore the 37th Annual Sounds & Sights Festival also held in downtown.

The two-day, three-night festival draws more than 15,000 visitors annually and features national and regional live music acts, local food and brew, an annual public art sculpture exhibit and activities for the entire family.
