There will be a special meeting of the Chelsea School District Board of Education on Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the board room at the Washington Street Education Center to continue the discussion about selection of an interim superintendent.

The board conducted a special meeting on May 31 to learn of possible candidates for the position.

At the regular meeting of the board on June 8, Steve Olsen, board president, presented the recommendation of the ad hoc committee, which consisted of Olsen and board members Anne Mann and Tammy Lehman. Based upon interviews of administrators, the president of the Chelsea Education Association, and solicitation of input from “the greater Chelsea education community,” as well as interviews of two candidates and consideration of the multiple requirements for the job, the committee recommended hiring David Killips to fill the interim superintendent position.

Olsen then provided an opportunity for board feedback. Greg Rhodes and Laura Bush expressed concern about choosing from a small pool of candidates. Dana Emmert and Laurel McDevitt supported meeting on June 10 for a more in-depth discussion of the issue.

  1. We are very fortunate that Dave Killips is available and
willing to serve our district on an interim basis.
A community leader with a proven track record – seems
like the ultimate no-brainer to me!

  2. Totally agree with Mr. Mann. Mr.
Killips knows the school community and is well connected with Chelsea. It only makes sense to take advantage of his willingness to act as the bridge between former superintendent Ingall and a well-vetted future superintendent.

  3. Will the community get a chance to be involved in the selection of the new superintendent? As in the case when Grand Haven choose Mr. Ingall?

    • The community is always welcome to go to any Board of Education meeting and comment on any relavent subjects during the public comment portion of the meeting. I am confident that the board will have a lengthy discussion about the attributes they are looking for, the process they will undertake to find superintendent candidates and the potential candidates themselves. I’ll be sure to let readers know when those discussions will begin taking place.

  4. I think the school board should make sure they look at all of their options. They should not just settle on a quick replacement. Chelsea should find an interim who is going to be able to get the school district though these uncertain times, where school funding is consistently taking a hit.

  5. Lisa- posting the meetings also on the chelsea community cares site would be great. Thank you!
