Larry Steeb Invitational: top coach, field, track athletes of the year

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Coach Eric Swager for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Boys Track and Field Team competed at the Larry Steeb Invitational on Tuesday, May 28 and came home with more hardware and accolades.

“We used this meet as a final tune-up going into the state championship meet this Saturday, and performed very well,” said
Head Track and Field Coach Eric Swager.

Swager was named “Coach of the Year” for the Larry Steeb Meet of Champions.

“It is a high honor, and well deserved,” said Shane Rodriguez, the head girls track and field coach.

The Bulldogs won the Division 2-3-4 contest and finished second overall to Saline.

Here are some of the highlights:

Mike Hovater won the pole vault with a season best 15-0 jump, and was also named “Field Athlete of the Year” in a touching midfield ceremony.

Berkley Edwards won “Male Track Athlete of the Year”, and responded by displaying his typical level of emotion while receiving the award.

“Both guys deserve it, and had great years,” the coach said.

The shuttle hurdle team set a new school record with their effort.

Austin Horn knocked 8+ seconds off his lifetime best mile to set a new meet record.

Shane McGrath moved up to #2 all-time on Chelsea’s best 300 hurdle list.

The 3200 relay recorded one of the top times in the state, and also moved into #2 all time on the school’s list.

Sam Katon turned in a lifetime best discus throw.

Mike Smith earned 2 medals to continue his fine season.

“I want to thank the coaches once again for their fine work with these athletes,” Swager said, adding, “I feel very good going into the state finals, and hope that this will be a great day for this squad.”
