Local Veterans to Be Honored by Chelsea Community

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Keegan Sulecki for the information in this story.)

Chelsea District Library (CDL) is pleased to announce the 2018 Veterans Day observance in partnership with the City of Chelsea, American Legion Post #31, VFW Post & Auxiliary No 4076, and Silver Maples of Chelsea on Sunday, Nov.11.

Local veterans and the public are encouraged to join us for these free events, starting with a Tribute to the Fallen in Veterans Park at 1pm, where City of Chelsea Mayor Melissa Johnson will introduce this year’s honored veterans.

This year, to observe the service of our local World War II veterans, we will be joined in Veterans Park by Staff Sergeant Alex Roskowski, U.S. Army Air Force; Corporal Ernie Sadler, U.S. Army; Seaman Donald Doll, U.S. Navy; and Seaman Ed Sutliff, U.S. Navy. During the event, we will be joined by the Herbert J. McKune American Legion Post #31 for the posting and retiring of colors and by Chelsea High School student Charlie Dahlgren who will be playing taps.

Following this tribute, our honored veterans, their families, and members of the public are invited to reconvene at Silver Maples of Chelsea located at 100 Silver Maples Dr.at 2 p.m. for light refreshments and a viewing of the award-winning film The Way We Get By.

This film, part of PBS’s award-winning nonfiction film series POV, follows the stories of three unsung heroes who greet all US troops as they arrive or depart from Iraq. Learn more about this film series at www.pbs.org/pov.

In addition to the day’s events and as a gesture of appreciation to our local active military and veterans, CDL is pleased to offer a new military library card beginning Nov.11.

“It’s a small way to give back to those who give so much to protect our country’s freedom,” said Lori Coryell, CDL director. This special card allows the holder to borrow materials without incurring overdue fees and provides $10/year toward printing costs.

To apply for a CDL military library card, you must live within the Chelsea District Library service area and provide one of the following forms of military identification: VA card, VA designation on driver’s license or state ID, active military ID, or discharge papers – DD-214.

For more information regarding these Veterans Day events, please contact the City of Chelsea, (734) 475-1771 or the Chelsea District Library, (734) 475-8732.
