With the City of Chelsea‘s transfer station closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, area residents are having a difficult time finding a place to take the items they no longer need.
“Our facility manager, Marc Williams, said that the amount of trash they are seeing at the bin sites has increased dramatically in the last weeks,” said Shawn Personke, PR and outreach coordinator for the WWRA.
“It seems so many people have more time to do their spring cleaning and all the house projects that have been on the “to do” list,” she said.
While the city’s transfer station is closed, there are other options to take your unwanted items, such as old furniture, construction waste, garden hoses, etc.
Liberty Landfill (link below) is one in the Jackson area and Monroe’s in Whitmore Lake is another.
The WWRA bin sites are for accepted materials such as cardboard, paper, glass, and plastic. A complete list is available at their website: www.wwrarecyles.org.
Other longer-term options for limiting the amount of junk one accumulates and other eco-friendly initiatives are supported by Zero Waste Chelsea, said Personke.
According to their Facebook page, Zero Waste Chelsea is a local organization whose mission “proudly supporting sustainable, reduced-waste solutions–from biodegradable trash bag options, city-wide composting, to the elimination of plastic bags and styrofoam.”
How about the LANDFILL? Trash seems to be collected within the city. Those of us who live in the townships and take our bags of non-recyclable trash to the landfill ourselves contribute money but are getting no service.
If I don’t get my household garbage (and I recycle AND compost kitchen waste) to the WWRA landfill soon, I will have to start piling it in my yard. How much of a risk is there when a drop-off station is outdoors?
