March 6: Chelsea Kiwanis to hear from Jon Tulman

Last Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from martial arts Grand Master Keith Hafner from Keith Hafner’s Karate.

Hafner has family in Chelsea and grew up in Dexter. He told the group he joined a martial arts program with his high school buddies in the early 1970’s. The training, he said, was militaristic, brutal and punishing, similar to the program depicted in the movie “Karate Kid”.

He told the group that his friends quit, but he soldiered on, eventually buying the business from the owner who moved out of town. Since then, he told the group, he has changed the training methods to instill discipline, confidence, and focus in his students with a more supportive, positive method.

This Monday, the club will hear from Jon Tulman, solid waste specialist, with Washtenaw County Water Resource Commissioner’s Office (WRCO). He will give us an overview of various programs and services that WRCO offers.

He will emphasize the residential hazardous waste program that he oversees and this spring, there will be a special day during which Chelsea residents will be able to bring their hazardous waste to a site locally.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. 

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
