May 12: Chelsea Area Garden Club 20th annual plant sale

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Mary Jo Frank for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Area Garden Club (CAGC) will host its 20th annual plant sale May 12 from 8 a.m.-noon at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds, 20501 Old U.S. 12.

Admission is free.

“The plant sale is a wonderful opportunity for gardeners looking to enhance their yards and flower or vegetable beds,” says CAGC President Susan Moore. “We’ll be selling locally grown perennials, ornamental grasses, vegetables and herbs, and other plants, including some 600 daylilies.”

GAGC vice president and sale co-chair Cathy Gillem says, “We’re very proud of the quality of our plants.” Club members collect and pot plants from members’ and friends’ gardens for the sale.

To make shopping easier, plants are organized by type, including whether they grow best in shade or sun. Most sell for $5 or less.

“The sale is a great way to get a variety of different plants each and every year,” says Kari Goorhouse, fitness manager at Chelsea Wellness Center and Chelsea High School fitness coach. “It was especially helpful when I was landscaping my new house.”

As in the past, members of Chelsea High School service clubs will direct traffic and help shoppers load their cars.  “We really appreciate their assistance,” Gillem says.

The sale is held rain or shine. Come early for the best selection, advises Merrill Crockett, who co-chairs the sale along with Gillem and Mary Randolph.

Plant sale proceeds are used for a $1,000 scholarship for a Chelsea High School senior and horticulture-related community projects.

CAGC 2018 grant recipients include the Chelsea Senior Center to hire a summer intern to work with seniors and children at its Intergenerational Garden, the Chelsea Farmers Market for children’s activities, the Chelsea Area Historical Society for plantings and benches at its museum, the Chelsea District Library to enhance Katie’s Korner on Main Street, Faith in Action Chelsea to purchase garden carts and materials to repair fencing at the Chelsea Community Garden, and the Waterloo Area Historical Society to install drip irrigation and pavers for rose beds that are part of a recently completed pergola at the Waterloo farm museum.

CAGC members also plant and maintain flowers along Chelsea’s Main Street and at the Chelsea District Library.

The CAGC meets noon to 2:30 p.m. on the second Monday of the month September through May at Chelsea First United Methodist Church, 128 Park St.
