May 16: Chelsea Kiwanis annual Boy Scout recognition

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Monday night will be the Chelsea Kiwanis annual recognition of Boy Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs, and their leaders for the valuable character building work being done here in Chelsea.

The club is honored to have been able to support scouting and we look forward to hearing about the boys favorite activities this past year. We will be recognizing Chelsea’s Girl Scouts separately later this year to allow enough time to hear about the many activities they enjoy.

On May 13, Kiwanis members will join hundreds of Washtenaw County’s children with disabilities at Hudson Mills Metropark for Cooper’s Fun Run. Chelsea’s Nancy Cooper started the day of fun and exercise over 30 years ago.

Children run, walk or ride their wheelchairs around the park. Each lap is about 3 miles and students can do one, two, or even three laps before rejoining their teachers and parents for a picnic lunch.

Our club looks forward to this event each year, rewarding participants with ribbons and trophies. Dexter High School‘s National Honor Society members prepare the trophies and help us cheer the finishers.

Huron Valley Ambulance is always there if needed, as well as a contingent of police directing traffic and parking.

On Monday, May 9, Rick Eder, Chelsea’s Farm Bureau Insurance agent, spoke about the Chelsea chapter of BNI.

BNI is the business networking organization that connects folks with businesses all over the country to meet their needs for goods and services. Chapters invite just one representative from each type of business and they work together to help each other. He also was very informative on Michigan’s no-fault insurance law.  Michigan is the only state with unlimited medical coverage for life.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy-Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.  Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis, click www.kiwanisclubofchelsea.org  For more information.
