“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” That’s the inscription found on New York City’s General Post Office, and it’s no doubt the message that has helped Heather Nichols climb from being a mail carrier to becoming Chelsea‘s new postmaster.

In early April, Nichols arrived in Chelsea to start the job. She works out of the post office located at 1101 South Main St. from which 12 delivery routes are based.

Customer service is also a big part of her job.

“People who come into the post office here are very friendly, and people are friendly at all the places I visit in the community,” said Nichols.

She lives in the Jackson area and began her career with the post office as a city carrier in Albion. She spent close to 10 years carrying mail. Then Nichols decided to get into management, and worked her way up to becoming a postmaster.

Nichols isn’t sure if she is Chelsea’s first female postmaster, but she knows that female postmasters are in the minority.

“For such a long time women weren’t in the workforce and then it was slow for women to get into government jobs,” said Nichols.

She says that she is pleased to be working in Chelsea and that her goal is to keep the people of Chelsea satisfied with their mail service.
