New path in Pierce Park ready for paving

By Lisa Carolin

How to get more families to use local space for recreation was one of the topics discussed by members of the Chelsea Parks Commission at its Nov. 5 meeting.

Commission member Sara Wedell brought up the topic that local youth are getting more involved with travel sports.

Commission member Andrew Thomson, the enrichment coordinator for Chelsea Community Education, said that despite the popularity of travel sports, local gymnasiums are packed every weeknight. He said that a lot of people are involved in community-based programs, though there is still a need to provide more spaces for recreation.

Wedell suggested activating spaces in Chelsea’s parks, and Thomson agreed that the goal is to encourage more open free play in all parks.

Commission members are looking at the first draft review of the Parks Plan Amendment, a document that will be sent to the State of Michigan for approval.

As far as the Pierce Park Improvement Project goes, Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan told the commission that a path has been created in Pierce Park and is ready to be paved.

The next meeting of the Parks Commission will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020 at 9 a.m. in City Council Chambers.

  1. Did you know…there is an available free soccer field with both adult size and youth size goals. It’s at North Lake United Methodist Church at 14111 North Territorial Rd just 7 min. North of town. We bought them to welcome groups to have soccer practice and fun anytime FREE of course. Please pass this invitation along..
