Nov. 11: Annual Veterans Day Celebration Highlights Women Veterans

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Shannon Powers for the information in this story.)

Chelsea District Library (CDL) is partnering with the City of Chelsea and American Legion Post #31 for an in-person celebration of the service and sacrifices of our veterans.

This year, the events will honor all veterans, but spotlight the service and experience of women veterans. Local veterans and the public are encouraged to join us on Nov. 11 for these free events, starting with a Tribute to the Fallen in Veterans Park at 1pm, where the newly-elected Chelsea Mayor will introduce this year’s honored veterans.

The Tribute to the Fallen ceremony acknowledges all those who have served and sacrificed in war. The ceremony will include posting and retiring of the colors by the Herbert J. McKune American Legion Post #31, as well as taps played by Chelsea High School student Clinton Nichols. This year, the City of Chelsea honors retired Army Nurse Captain Patricia Schleede. Schleede served the United States Army for 26 years, 22 years in the reserve and 4 years in active duty, and is a Desert Shield/Desert Storm veteran.

Following this tribute, our honored veterans, their families, and members of the public are invited to reconvene at the Chelsea Comfort Inn Village Conference Center, located at 1645 Commerce Park Dr., Chelsea, at 2pm for light refreshments and the presentation “Her Service and Her Sacrifice” by Michigan veteran, Spc. Meghan Shellington. Shellington is a featured veteran in the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency’s “She is A Veteran” campaign. Shellington’s presentation will discuss her experiences as a female veteran, as well as the role of women in the military over time.

“To all who served past and present God bless you for the sacrifices you have made in choosing to serve this great country.” Capt. Patricia Schleede, RN, BSN
