Nov. 11: City of Chelsea and Chelsea District Library partner to celebrate Veterans Day

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Shannon Powers for the information in this story.)

One of the annual events that Chelsea District Library (CDL) values is commemorating our local veterans. While health and safety restrictions make an in-person celebration impossible this year, CDL does not want a year to pass without recognition of the sacrifice and heroism of the men and women of our armed services.

This year, the library invites you to celebrate Veterans Day by visiting www.chelseadistrictlibrary.org/veterans-day

and viewing the Chelsea Community History Project: Vietnam Veterans documentary. This 50-minute documentary features Chelsea residents and their experiences serving in the military during the Vietnam conflict.

This year, the video will include a special message from Mayor Melissa Johnson and Howard Flintoff on behalf of the American Legion.

Beginning Nov. 11, the video can be viewed on Public Access Channel 18, on the city’s website, www.city-chelsea.org, or by visiting www.chelseadistrictlibrary.org/veterans-day.

The CDL site includes three other Chelsea Community History Project Documentaries honoring veterans from the Korean War, World War I, and World War II. All of these documentaries and many other historical resources can be viewed year-round at www.storiesofchelsea.org

As a small gesture of our gratitude, CDL offers a military library card. While all CDL library cards are now fine free, the special military card also includes $10 of free printing per year.

To apply for a CDL military library card, you must live within the Chelsea District Library service area and provide one of the following forms of military identification: VA card, VA designation on driver’s license or state ID, active military ID, or discharge papers – DD214.

To all of our veterans, Director Lori Coryell sends this message: “Today and every day, CDL is grateful for the service members and their families in our community who have sacrificed much on our behalf. You are our heroes.”
