There will be a new face on the Chelsea Downtown Development Authority Board this month, and a familiar face reappointed to both the city’s Planning Commission and its Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) following unanimous approval of the Chelsea City Council on Aug. 1.
Jonathan Curtis, current president of the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce board, a chiropractor and downtown business owner, was appointed to the DDA board for a term that will end Dec. 31, 2025, while Jamie Lane was appointed to the city’s Planning Commission and the ZBA for terms that coincide and end on June 30, 2025.
The city’s Planning Commission and City Council will meet in a joint session on Monday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. for a work session to be facilitated by Jamie Gorenflo, the city’s planning consultant. They will discuss current and upcoming development projects in the city. Two council members have already said they will not able to attend, but it’s expected that the meeting will be videotaped and available for subsequent viewing.
The third of the city’s three reverse osmosis pumps will soon be rebuilt following a request by Corey Davis, superintendent of the water and wastewater departments. Kerr Pump and Supply was awarded the contract for the budgeted item of about $17,360. This preventative maintenance project follows the work done on the two other system pumps in previous years.
The City Council also approved a request by Check Stevens to purchase a new diesel pick-up truck for the electric department. The budgeted purchase was a 2023 GMC Sierra 2500 DD Crew cab 4×4 pick-up truck at a price of about $46,800.
City Manager Roy Atkinson reminded the City Council during his report that the deadline for applications for Chelsea’s new police chief closes on Friday and thus far, there are 10 applicants.
Friday, Aug. 5 is also the cut-off date for residents who would like to apply to be a member of the Community Public Safety Strategic Planning Group. (More information can be found at the end of this story.) The new chief and this group of volunteers are expected to work together on a public safety plan for the city.
