Beach Middle School sixth-grader Savannah Fisk, 12, and her family have a lot to be proud of. Savannah competed at the USA Gymnastics Level 5 State Meet April 4 in Holland, Michigan and placed first in the all-around Junior C division with a 37.800. Her team also won first place.

Savannah placed first in the vault with a 9.675, first in the bars with a 9.550, and first in the floor exercise with a 9.475. She placed sixth on the balance beam with a 9.1.

Her mom, Vanessa Fisk, says that Savannah has been in gymnastics year-round since she was 3-years-old.

“Savannah practices four times a week for four-and-a-half hours at a time,” said Vanessa Fisk. “My husband and I do a lot of driving. Savannah spends her time in the car doing homework and eating.”

That’s because they take Savannah to the nationally ranked gym Twistars in Dimondale, Mich., an hour away, where she trains with coaches Erin Leece, Brett Wargo and Blaize Geddert. They’ve been going there for the last year.

“Savannah decided she wanted to really pursue gymnastics at a higher level,” said Vanessa Fisk. “She wanted the best coaching and wanted to really go after her goal of becoming a collegiate gymnast.”

“She likes to push herself to get new skills, and she likes the mental edge needed to compete at a high level,” said Vanessa Fisk.

Savannah’s favorite event is floor because she likes the tumbling and the dance element. Her mom says that she enjoys the team aspect of competing the most, especially cheering on her friends and teammates.
