Publisher’s message: Mother Nature, recycling and stuff

I don’t mess with Mother Nature and she had much different plans for me this week than the ones I had in mind, but I’m sure many of you can relate.

It was Wednesday before I made it out of my home and got to the Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority meeting.

Speaking of recycling, here’s a reminder to Sylvan Township residents. You are probably aware that Sylvan is no longer a member municipality of WWRA. What this means is residents in the townships of Bridgewater, Lima, Lyndon and Dexter are paying a yearly fee of $26 to bring their recyclable materials to one of the several recycling bins located in Western Washtenaw.

Chelsea, too, is a member municipality, and residents pay more because they have curbside pick-up.

These yearly fees help to pay for the operating costs of single-stream operations. So, Sylvan Township residents, if you’re like me, and continue to bring your recycling to one of the nearby bins, please consider paying the $26 that the member municipality residents do.

I send a check to WWRA each year, and never feel guilty when I load up my van with recyclables and put them in the bins, saving money on my trash collection costs.

Yes, I know that the recycled items are sold, but WWRA is trying to pay off a $2.7 million bond for the new single-stream operation as quickly as possible. Plus, I’m one of those people who doesn’t mind paying my fair share for a service that I frequently use.

So, if you’d like to voluntarily pay for your use of the recycling bins, please send a check for $26 made out to WWRA to 8027 Werkner Road, Chelsea, MI 48118 and put recycling in the memo portion.

And while I’m on the topic of money, if you enjoy reading Chelsea Update, please consider making a donation of any amount to my efforts.

I hate to beg for donations, but readers tell me I need to keep reminding people that Chelsea Update is how I’m trying to make a living and it has no corporate backing. I love every moment I spend covering the Chelsea community for you, the readers, but I need your help to continue my efforts.

I hear very few complaints about the job I’m doing, and everyone who regularly reads Chelsea Update tells me how much they love it. So, I hope you’ll consider making a donation via PalPay or by sending a check made out to Chelsea Update and sending it to 18829 Bush Road, Chelsea, MI 48118.

I have lots of great stories planned for you this week, so happy reading.
