Recap of the Jan. 7 Sylvan Township Board meeting

Here’s a recap of some of the business that took place on Tuesday, Jan. 7 Sylvan Township Board meeting that I was unable to attend because of the weather.

  • On Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:15 p.m., the board will hold a special meeting and the two topics of discuss are options for a water and sewer overlay district as well as a discussion about the Chelsea Area Fire Authority.
  • On Wednesday, Jan. 22, also at 7:15 p.m., the board plans to have a special meeting to discuss a proposed 2014-2015 budget.
  • The board approved the reappointment of Tom Bareis and Leah Herrick to the township’s Planning Commission and Ed Blissick to the township’s Zoning Board of Appeals.
  • The board approved a meeting of township representatives with Randy Lee to discuss the details of possibly videotaping future township board meetings. Lee videotapes public meetings in Chelsea, including the City Council and Downtown Development Authority.
  • The township is looking for interested residents to help improve the township. Supervisor Scott Cooper said he hopes that residents will come forward with their ideas for goals, programs and events that would help to improve the township.

“If residents have suggestions, we hope they will bring them forward,” Cooper said, adding that there are residents who have expertise in many areas who are retired (attorneys, CPA, grant writers, for instance) and he hopes they will come forward to donate their time to make the township a better place to live.

If there’s a grant writer, out there, for instance, he says, perhaps this person would volunteer to help the township apply for grant for a generator for Township Hall.

“There are a lot of people out there with talents,” Cooper said, and we hope they will stop by the township offices or send township officials a resume or letter with what they’d like to do for the township.

  • Officials are also compiling township goals for 2014 and Cooper said he’d like to see the township work with the Chrysler Proving Grounds so Sylvan could provide the property with sewer and water services.
  • Also on his list, he says, is applying for a grant to provide the township offices with a generator. Operations cease when there is no electricity in Township Hall. Plus, he said, if the township could get grant funding, Township Hall could be used as either a heating or cooling center for residents who are without power.
