Rick Catherman moving, resigns from Chelsea City Council

(Publisher’s note: this is the first of several stories from the June 15 Chelsea City Council meeting.)

At the Monday, June 15 Chelsea City Council meeting, Member Rick Catherman resigned from office because he and his family are moving out of town.

After more than 30 years of teaching, the last 20 in the Chelsea District Schools, Catherman is retiring, he said, and he is moving to South Haven.

He thanked his fellow council members, city staff, and the residents who elected him as a council member about three years ago.

He also singled out several individuals including City Clerk Laura Kaiser, Mayor Melissa Johnson and former City Council Member Frank Hammer, from whom he said he learned a lot while in office.

His resignation was accepted with “deep regret” by his fellow council members, who also thanked him for his time on the City Council and several jokingly asked if his boat would be large enough to accommodate all of them should they visit him in his retirement.

Catherman’s term ends in November 2021, which means City Council will appoint another city resident to fill out his term. Details about the process for applying for his seat will be forthcoming.

  1. Thanks Rick, for giving so much to the Chelsea community. You’re a terrific example to us all. Thank you for helping with my city questions in the past. South Haven is lucky to have you as a resident.
