Ride to defeat ALS on June 22

236913The ALS Association Michigan Chapter, a non-profit organization, will host the annual cycling event on June 22 at the Aberdeen Bike Shop on 1101 S. Main.

The event raises money and awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and cyclists ride for hope to uncover the cause and the ultimate cure for ALS so no individual may suffer or family bear witness to the disease ever again, according to information about the event.

Solitary and team cyclists will gather beginning at 7 a.m. at the bike shop and ride their selected routes. The routes vary in length and difficulty, therefore riders will return between 1-4 p.m.

And, there will be an after-ride reception beginning at 1 p.m.

There are four routes cyclists can select.

  • Century: 100-mile route that begins with a shotgun start and winds through two great scenic locations
  • Metric Century- approximately 62 miles that winds through lightly traveled streets, paved trails and residential areas with a pleasant view of the Washtenaw county country side.
  • Iron Pony- 25-mile route novice riders can embark upon at a slower pace if they wish. It is open to all riders.
  • 5-mile family fun ride- come out with your whole family and enjoy a fun day outdoors and do it for a cause.

All rides are within a 20-mile radius of the bike shop.

240493The organization has been raising money and awareness to end a fatal motor neuron degenerative disease that imprisons a healthy mind in an immobile body.

“We serve more than 400 families currently affected by ALS in Michigan,” according to the press release.

The ALS Association is the only national non-profit health organization that pioneers research, provides patient care, advocates better policies, encourages public education and provides community services for ALS patients and families.

During two ride events last year, the group raised about $20,000. These funds go toward ALS patient care services programs and our persistent research efforts to find the cause and cure for ALS.
