See Alternative Paving Systems work at Veterans Park

John Scott places a brick in Veterans Park in Chelsea.

While you’re attending Sunday’s Veterans Day ceremony at Veterans Park, be sure to take the time to admire the work of John Scott and his son, Jacob, 24, and Alternative Paving Systems.

The father-and-son business has done a lot of projects around town, and you’ve probably seen their designs – the new bricks pavers in front of the Purple Rose Theatre, St. Mary Church, or at the Chelsea High School football stadium.

Perhaps you’ve noticed the brick work in front of the police station or at a friend’s home.

“Each job is unique,” John Scott said. “The color, the terrain; there is a lot of interaction with the homeowners for a unique design.

The father-and-son team uses only U.S. manufactured brick from clay, and makes sure that “the base is prepped properly before compaction.”

The company specializes in unique design and construction brick pavers, retaining walls and sidewalks, which include products such as balconies and stairs, driveways and sidewalks, raised patios and retaining walls.

And, the company’s projects have been highlighted in the Keystone & Fendt Supplies’ brochures for many years.

Scott said that the company focuses on quality and customer service and makes sure that the base – the structural integrity of a job – is done properly so water drains properly and doesn’t ruin the project.

In addition to custom brick work, the company is responsible for the planters at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds and various other locations downtown.

“We’re leaving something that will be around a long time,” John Scott said.

The company has also completed a number of other local projects downtown, including fix-it jobs, such as sidewalk repairs and assistance jobs, such as the truncated domes at the crosswalks downtown, which help the visually impaired navigate the walkways.

In their 22nd year in the business, the father-and-son duo also create both business and residential designs, including retaining walls, brick driveways, patios and sidewalks.

“I like being part of the community,” John Scott said, adding, “We’ve employed a lot of kids from the high school over the years,” for summer work.

“It’s nice to help out kids from town,” he said.

Please call 475-4277 for more information.

“We go the extra mile,” he said, and the company does all its own unique designs and construction.
