SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments, and its partner organization, the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition (MAC), have launched a Pulse of the Region survey to collect perceptions on Southeast Michigan’s access to fast, reliable internet service as well as its importance in daily life.
Responses will help to guide planning efforts to support shared prosperity throughout Southeast Michigan.
“COVID-19 has accelerated the growth of high speed internet as a tool for accessing services and opportunities,” said Amy O’Leary, SEMCOG executive director and MAC president in a press release. “This survey will help us to continue growing our understanding the role of broadband in daily life as well as challenges people may be experiencing.”
Broadband is most easily defined as “fast” internet. It may be provided by a cable or phone company, satellite or public network. Smart phones, most digital devices, and social media are all based on broadband access.
Broadband can be provided using different technologies, including Cable Modem, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL); Fiber; Satellite; and Wireless. Utilization of each is determined by physical conditions, rural or urban location, cost, and availability.
