Changes are coming to downtown Chelsea in the New Year.

Serendipity Books is swapping locations with Copper Crate Mercantile, which will be moving to 113 West Middle St. while the book store takes over at 108 East Middle St.

Copper Crate Mercantile and Unique Rentals will close at its existing location on Dec. 26 and reopen at the beginning of next year after kitchen renovations.

Serendipity Books will close at its existing location on Dec. 31 and re-open at the new location on Jan. 15, 2022.

Michelle Tuplin, owner of Serendipity books, says the double bay windows will be a welcome addition at the store’s new location.

“Serendipity Books has seen such immense community support and subsequent growth that moving to a location with more great features became a possibility,” said Tuplin. “Chelsea visitors and newer residents yet to discover Serendipity Books will now find the bookstore as they stroll by. Fabulous window displays showcasing the latest and greatest, along with vintage treasures and bookish gifts will spread the word that we have a successful independent bookstore in town.”

KaTina Blanchard, owner of Copper Crate Mercantile and Unique Rentals, said, “We are so fortunate to be a part of a supportive and cooperative business community where individuals really do work together.”

“Obviously, we are both big fans of Middle Street,” said Tuplin, “And we couldn’t be more excited for what lies ahead.”

Tuplin says the book store’s new location will also feature such architectural details as a tin ceiling and a wooden floor with a rich patina.

“Inside there will be eclectic vintage treasures to discover tucked in amongst the latest indie bestsellers,” said Tuplin. “A curated collection with plenty of staff notes recommending favorites, will take center stage, and, of course, we’ll always play French Swing Jazz.”

Tuplin has received a number of offers from local business owners to help with the move.

“Being a business owner in a small town means doing business with friends,” she said. “Serendipity Books’ partnerships with the schools, the library, organizations, and other businesses around town are all examples of working with people who are also great friends and neighbors. This is a reminder of how much support exists in the community for an independent bookstore. As the bookstore owner, it feels like one big, warm hug.”
