St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Chelsea hospitals named to the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® List

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bobby Maldonado for the information in this story.)

St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea hospitals, members of Trinity Health Michigan, have been named to the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® list.

This is the 12th time that St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor has been named (2021, 2020, 2019, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2009, 1999, 1996), and the third time that St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, a joint venture hospital with Trinity Health and Michigan Medicine, has been recognized (2021, 2009, 1993).

St. Joe’s Ann Arbor has been recognized with this honor as #3 in the 15 Top Major Teaching Hospital category in the U.S. St. Joe’s Chelsea has been named #20 in the Top Small Community Hospital category. Also recognized as a Top100 hospital is St. Joe’s sister hospital, Mercy Health Saint Mary’s, which was named #4 on the 15 Top Major Teaching Hospital list.

“We are thrilled to be on this national list of the top hospitals in the U.S. based on metrics in key areas, including clinical outcomes and patient experience,” said Nancy Graebner, president and CEO, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea. “St. Joe’s Chelsea is proud to be a small community hospital that delivers consistently exceptional care to residents throughout the surrounding area.”

IBM Watson Health has identified the top hospitals from a rigorous evaluation of 2,675 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the U.S. The annual list recognizes excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health.

According to IBM Watson Health, as compared to similar hospitals, the hospitals included on the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list had better results on key clinical and operational performance indicators. These include survival rates, patient complications, healthcare associated infections, 30-day mortality and 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates, length of stay, throughput in emergency departments, inpatient expenses, profitability and ratings from patients.

This year’s ranking of top hospitals also introduces a measure of hospitals’ contributions to community health with a focus on equity developed by a team of experts at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity and the Bloomberg American Health Initiative at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

For the ranking, hospitals were surveyed across three components:

1) assessing hospital contributions to community health as a provider of critical services for community health and preventive care;

2) identifying ways that hospitals contribute to community health as a community partner teaming up with local organizations to implement critical programs; and

3) focusing on ways that hospitals promote community health through their practices as anchor institutions supporting local economic and social progress.

Hospitals received credit for meeting a certain number of best practice standards in each component as part of the survey scoring and the new measure led to a change in ranking for more than one-third of the 100 hospitals.

“We are so honored to be named to this list, which is one of the most notable recognitions for a hospital based on real data and results,” said Alonzo Lewis, president, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Livingston. “This year, I am delighted to see that the work hospitals are doing in the area of community health and improving equity is one of the metrics, and deeply proud that the work we are doing in this area has been recognized.”
