St. Joseph Mercy Cancer Program in the Chelsea as well as in Ann Arbor, Brighton, and Canton locations has been named a Screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) for its ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening.

Low dose CT screening for lung cancer carried out safely, efficiently and equitably saves tens of thousands of lives a year, according to a press release.

“We are proud and honored to be working with St. Joseph Mercy Cancer Program as a Lung Cancer Alliance Screening Center of Excellence,” says LCA President and CEO Laurie Fenton Ambrose in a press release.

“Their commitment to practice responsible lung cancer screening will lead to advancements in research and many lives saved. They are an example to follow,” Ambrose said.

Designated Screening Centers of Excellence are committed to provide clear information based on:

  • current evidence on who is a candidate for lung cancer screening to comply with comprehensive standards
  • best practices developed by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program
  • for controlling screening quality, radiation dose and diagnostic procedures within an experienced, multi-disciplinary clinical setting.

“We are so pleased to be recognized for what we offer—a high-quality screening program with the full spectrum of services that enable us to detect lung cancer at an early and treatable stage, and care for patients throughout their treatment,” says Vita McCabe, M.D., medical director for thoracic oncology services, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.
