Timeline Set to Fill School Board Vacancy

By Crystal Hayduk

The Chelsea School District (CSD) Board of Education (BOE) has finalized its new timeline to appoint a trustee to fill the vacancy left by Keri Poulter’s resignation.

Poulter’s Jan. 7 resignation was announced at the school board meeting on Jan. 10. (Related story here.)

Anyone interested in serving the district through board membership may apply for the open position by submitting a letter of interest, resume, and notarized proof of residency to the superintendent’s executive assistant, Vicky Lawrence, at [email protected]; or to BOE trustee Laura Bush at [email protected] no later than 3 p.m. on Jan. 28.

Application materials may also be presented in person at the central administration office, Building 600, at the Washington Street Education Center (WSEC), 500 Washington St.

There will be a special board of education meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 in the board room at the WSEC, Building 100, to fill the position. Everyone is invited.

Candidates will be given the opportunity to speak for three to five minutes. Board members may also choose to ask follow-up questions.

Board members will rank the candidates by choice (#1, #2, etc.) on cards to be tallied during the meeting. The candidate receiving the lowest total score will be selected to fill the vacancy.

The board will vote publicly to accept the candidate (majority vote of the full board is required), who will take the oath of office before the close of the special meeting.

The person who is selected to fill the vacancy will retain the position until the next regular school board election, Nov. 8, 2022. The winner of the school board election will replace the appointed individual, who will serve for the remainder of that seat’s term, through 2024.
