Nine years after it was established, the Chelsea Senior Center’s Intergenerational Garden has a new name – the Trinh Pifer Intergenerational Garden.

The dedication took place on a lovely fall day, Thursday, Oct. 28, with more than 50 people gathered at the garden.

Jennifer Smith, assistant director of the Chelsea Senior Center, who worked with Pifer, the former executive director of the senior center, for five years, told the crowd, “Trinh was key to getting the Intergenerational Garden going. She was passionate about getting the generations together.”

Pifer died in June of 2021, after which the Chelsea Senior Center Board of Directors voted unanimously to honor her legacy by renaming the garden.

The idea was for kids and seniors to share the gardening experience together, and that’s exactly what’s been happening.

“Trinh loved to eat, cook, and garden,” said Smith. “She was a fierce advocate for senior citizens and saw the value in sharing their knowledge with younger generations.”

Pifer’s husband Dan Pifer and their daughter Leah also attended the dedication.

5 Healthy Towns Foundation donated two colorful signs which are hung at the Trinh Pifer Intergenerational Garden and include a photo of Pifer as well as photos of other garden participants, information on the garden, and the garden’s new logo.

Benches have also been donated in Pifer’s honor including one not far from the garden’s entrance, which was donated by her book club, the Baker’s Dozen (now with just 11 members due to Pifer’s death).
