What You Should Know About the Chelsea Social District

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Julia Upfal for the information in this story.)

The City of Chelsea is excited to introduce the newly established Downtown Social District.

The State of Michigan enacted Social Districts when Governor Whitmer signed House Bill 5781 into law on July 1, 2020, authorizing municipalities to designate districts where cocktail, beer, and wine consumption may be permitted.

Chelsea’s Social District boundaries are the east side of Main Street from Jet’s Pizza to the intersection of Park St. and Main. The Social District extends on the west side of Main Street from Zou Zou’s to Palmer Commons.

Visitors to Chelsea’s downtown will find the Social District’s boundaries annotated by signs placed along the city’s sidewalks.

Jet’s Pizza, the Grateful Crow, Zou Zou’s and Ugly Dog Distillery have chosen to participate in Chelsea’s downtown Social District. Visitors are encouraged to visit the designated consumption areas shown on the Social District maps.

The Chelsea Social District’s Hours of Operation are:

Sunday – Thursday: noon-8 p.m.

Friday – Saturday:  noon-10 p.m.

The Chelsea Social District will be closed on Labor Day and the District’s trial period authorization is set to expire on Sept. 20, 2021.

For more details on the Chelsea Social District, contact the Community Development Department at the City of Chelsea at (734) 475-1771 ext. 210.
