There are radishes and tomatoes, pumpkins and squash, sunflowers, kale, beans, broccoli, watermelon and cabbage.
And this is just a short list of the many veggies at the thriving Intergenerational Garden at the Chelsea Senior Center, 512 Washington St.
If you haven’t had a chance to see this fully fenced, cooperative gardening effort of the school district and the senior center, here’s a special opportunity. You can experience the garden in its green splendor and attend a special fundraising Yellow Door benefit on Wednesday, Aug. 1 from 8-11 a.m.
Head to the Washington Street Education Center cafeteria and enjoy the special gourmet breakfast and get a tour of the garden.
“The menu will tempt you with gourmet brunch options and feature seasonal produce from the garden or local growers and producers,” said Trinh Pifer, senior center director, adding, “Did I mention homemade blueberry crumble?”
The breakfast options feature seasonal produce from the about 80 by 80 foot garden or from local growers and producers. There’s a suggested donation of $15, which will support the effort that was begun through a series of grants and donations of money, materials and manpower.
There will be three breakfast choices:
Option 1: Swiss Chard & Parsnip Crustless Quiche, Bacon, Garden Salad
Option 2: Potato and Kale Pancakes, Gazpacho, Garden Salad
Option 3: Blueberry Crumble, Yogurt and Granola Parfait, Garden Salad
Coffee, Hot Tea, Herbed Iced Tea, Water
Through the garden, both young and old are learning basic gardening skills, and visitors to the Yellow Door event can enjoy their meal inside or outside by the garden.
