Lima Township looking at stringent dog park ordinance

By Lisa Carolin

The proposed dog park ordinance for Lima Township will not make it easy to open a dog park in the Township.

The Lima Township Board voted 5-0 at its Feb. 8 meeting to table a recently written dog park ordinance amendment until next month pending revision.

“It’s very stringent,” said Supervisor Craig Maier about the ordinance, which he said came about because, “the Township wants to have something on the books.”

The ordinance includes such restrictions for a dog park as a minimum of 10-acres for the lot size, a 100-foot setback from the property line, a noise barrier, a storm waste management plan, and a variety of regulations about the dogs themselves.

In addition, the ordinance requires that there must be an operator on site whenever the park is open.

Any applicant interested in opening a dog park must also apply for a special use permit.

Maier called it, “a double layer of security.”

The board approved 5-0 a Fire Emergency Medical Charges Ordinance, to clarify costs that the Chelsea Area Fire Authority can recover.

The annual Heart and Sole Race takes place Saturday, May 21, and the board approved 5-0 a resolution to close Trinkle Road between Freer and Fletcher Roads from 8-11:15 a.m. that day.

During the meeting’s time for public comment, Barbara Fuller introduced herself. She is a resident of Manchester and a member of the Washtenaw County Road Commission and is running for 52nd District State Representative.
