Chelsea Field Hockey (CFH) wrapped up its annual Play4TheCure campaign on Oct. 16 with a goal-smashing $4,314.17 raised for The National Foundation for Cancer Research.

The fundraising effort is attributed to many from the Chelsea and field hockey communities who donated online, as well as on game day and through various hometown rallies. Greenhills School of Ann Arbor, CFH’s middle school game day opponent, raised nearly $1,000 to contribute to Chelsea Field Hockey’s Play4TheCure event.

“In honor and gratitude of Roxy Block and Leslie Fry who have been the heart and soul of field hockey at all levels in Southeastern Michigan spanning five decades,” said Greenhills Field Hockey Coach Marsha Mumm. “These two women have worked tirelessly to promote and maintain field hockey in Michigan, and their knowledge, dedication, energy, commitment, and sacrifices are the main reason that this great sport continues to grow and flourish today.”

Block and Fry co-founded Chelsea Field Hockey as the Washtenaw Whippets in 2004.

During the Oct. 6 game day, Mumm and singer-songwriter Kenzie Moore sang spine-tingling National Anthems prior to the Chelsea High School Varsity game and Beach Middle School game, respectfully. A tailgate celebration by CFH Whippets, a team of fourth and fifth graders who competed this fall, preceded the game day event.

On Oct. 13, Pinckney Field Hockey held a “Stick it to Cancer” event and raised $255 to contribute to the Play4TheCure campaign as well. Combined with funds donated by Dexter Field Hockey and Ann Arbor Skyline — the varsity opponent on game day, the Play4TheCure event demonstrated genuine community-wide teamwork to defeat cancer.

Since 2015, the team has raised $8,995.83 for cancer research.

Chelsea Field Hockey concludes the fall season after the State Tournament, which starts Oct. 19. The organization offers winter training for younger athletes during Chelsea Community Education’s Super Saturdays in March, as well as a spring league and a week-long summer camp in June. Ann Arbor-based Fer De Lance Hockey Club and Pinnacle Field Hockey offer indoor training through March, and spring and summer training as well.
