Maggie Cole, a fifth-year Chelsea Field Hockey varsity athlete (formerly Washtenaw Whippets), will compete at the USA Field Hockey’s National Futures Championship from June 29 through July 2.

She is one of only two athletes representing Michigan at the U19 age level.

This is Cole’s fourth year competing at the National level. She was invited to participate in the championships after excelling at Futures at the regional level for five consecutive years. Futures is USA Field Hockey’s Olympic development program.

“I am very excited to play at the National Futures Championship again,” says Cole. “It is a great time to play against other field hockey players who have outstanding skills and achievements. The tournament will give me a competitive experience that will, hopefully, help prepare me for college play at Michigan State University. I look forward to playing at a higher level, and meeting new friends.”

Cole, who began playing field hockey as a seventh grader, has been Chelsea Field Hockey’s leading scorer since 2011. She has 46 career goals and 27 assists with the team.  Also since 2011, she was selected to represent the Michigan High School Field Hockey Association (MHSFHA) All-State First Team.

In 2013 and 2014, Harrow Sports and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association appointed Cole to the High School All-Region Team, representing the Midwest Region. For the most recent 2014 fall season, Cole was the only Michigan athlete appointed to the High School All-Region Team.

In conjunction with Pinnacle, an Ann Arbor-based travel field hockey team, Cole has competed at numerous regional and national competitions, including the annual Disney Showcase. Her expert field skills earned her a spot at the 2013 Junior Olympics.

“Maggie is an exciting player to watch,” says Chelsea Field Hockey Coach Leslie Fry. “She plays with speed, agility and determination to control the field. Maggie is a superb team player both offensively and defensively. We are proud that she is representing our team and school.”

Cole has a GPA of 3.924.

She will play one more season in the fall 2015 for Chelsea Field Hockey before she graduates in 2016.

Chelsea Field Hockey was established in 2004 by coaches Leslie Fry and Roxy Block as Washtenaw Whippets, consisting of Chelsea, Dexter, Saline, Pinckney and Manchester athletes. Significant growth within the MHFHA spurred the development of separate high school teams in Dexter and Saline. Pinckney is in the process of developing a new high school team as well, while Chelsea Field Hockey continues to grow with varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams.
