The Chelsea freshman football team defeated Monroe, 39-27, on Thursday to move their record to 7-1 on the season.

Kyle Knight threw four touchdown passes; Garrett Steele caught two of them. Zach Sanborn caught one, and Mitch Reynolds had a TD catch. Chelsea also had TD runs from Mitch Reynolds and Riley Sumner.

Defensively, Garrett Steele was in on 18 tackles and forced two fumbles. Aidan Boote had 5 tackles, broke up two pass and recovered a fumble. Sam Michael had 6 tackles for the Bulldogs.

Chelsea managed to create three turnovers while only committing one. That was key to the win.

“For the second week in a row, we played a team that was really talented and really big, but the kids found a way to hang in there and get the win,” said coach Dennis Strzyzewski. “I can’t say enough about the composure and leadership these guys exhibit at freshman.”

“That Monroe team is big and physical,” the coach said, adding, “The game was played more physically that most freshman games. Our kids were physically overwhelmed at times, but they just kept going to the next play and competing.”

“I can’t express how fun it has been to see their maturation.  I hope they are enjoying playing as much as we enjoy coaching them,” he said.

The team will finish its season at Battle Creek Pennfield Thursday.
