Chelsea girls track and field finishes 3rd in regionals

The Chelsea girls’ track and field team ran well at the MHSAA regional last Friday, taking 3rd place out of 16 teams.

The meet was highlighted by the following regional champions:

  • the 4×100 relay team of Kaehla Manly, Christine Schultz, Laura McGrath, and Rachael Yordanich
  • the 4×200 relay team of Sydney Matusik, Christine Schultz, Laura McGrath, Rachael Yordanich
  • Christine Schultz won the pole vault

Overall, there were eight girls that qualified in multiple events.

One of the great surprises was Hannah Almhiemid in the 100 hurdles, taking second and qualifying for the finals.

Laura McGrath also took 2nd in the 300 hurdles.

Karana Wickens and Artemis Eyster took 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 3200 meter run, with both qualifying for the state finals.

Freshman runner Sydney Matusik ran a great 400 meter dash to take fifth and qualify on time for the state finals.

“There were a good number of other improvements and outstanding performances,” the coach said, adding, “Overall, it was a good day to compete and show all of the hard work and consistency that these girls have put in over the season.”

The team travels to Linden on May 23 for the MITCA team state finals, and the eight aforementioned girls will compete at the MHSAA state finals on May 30.
