The Chelsea Girls track and field team performed well at the state meet held at Zeeland East/West Track facility on Saturday, June 3.

The following girls were State Qualifiers and competed: Hannah Almhiemid, Jenna Gileczek, Sabrina Matusko, Sydney Matusik, Kaehla Manly, and Myranda Montoye.

Team Highlights:

Three Lady Bulldog athletes placed in the Top 10 in their individual events. Also, we had three personal records (PRs), a season best 4×400 relay time, and three of our athletes beat their seeds in their events. I thought it was an enjoyable and memorable day for our state team, said coach Loren Thorburn.

Individual Highlights:

Hannah Almhiemid competed in the 100m and 300m hurdle races as well as the 3rd leg of the 4x400m relay. She placed 10th at the state meet in the 300m hurdles with a PR of 46.84, which puts her 5th all-time fastest in this event. She beat her seed by seven places.

Sydney Matusik placed 9th in a very competitive field in the 400m dash. She was only a tenth from making All-State. She had a season record time of 59.72. She also ran the 2nd leg of the 4x400m relay at States. She beat her seed by four places.

Jenna Gileczek tied for 9th in the pole vault with a height of 10′ 0″. She just missed 10′ 6″ on her last attempt by the slimmest of margins. She was very close to placing in the top eight.

Sabrina Matusko jumped 8′ 6″ in her debut at the state meet. She was able to overcome a number of early missed attempts during competition and almost put together a 9′ 0″ jump on her last attempt.

Anna Piloske threw the discus 98′ 1″ (a PR) and almost had a triple digit throw on her last attempt, which just went out of bounds. She beat her seed by six places!

Kaehla Manly and Myranda Montoye both had excellent splits in the 4x400m relay legs. Kaehla had a season record 400m split time of 60.86, while Myranda had a PR split time of 61.81. These two helped the 4x400m relay set their season best time.
