Almost 350 Chelsea High School students adorned their finery to celebrate in style at their prom held at the Chelsea Comfort Inn and Village Conference Center on May 2.

The theme for this year’s prom was Casino Royale. According to Kelly Bertoni, president of the student council, the junior class decided last fall that the theme, which included card games and refreshments, would “…be a fun way to get more interaction among students besides dancing.”

More students than usual attended this year, but the crowd did not overwhelm the venue, thanks to the addition of an outdoor tent with seating. “Comfort Inn has been terrific with helping us out in so many ways,” Bertoni said. “Everything has turned out great.”

For the 12th year in a row, music was provided by Metro Entertainment DJ Services. DJ Tomas Belba said that he plays a mix of everything because Chelsea students enjoy all types of music.

Upon their arrival, students were given an initial stake of $500 in pretend chips to be used to play various games such as blackjack, roulette, Texas Hold ‘em, and poker. “Winnings” were converted to raffle entries for prizes from local establishments.

Students Audrey Timberlake and Meghan O’Neill were impressed by the evening’s events. “This is a lot of fun,” said Timberlake. “It was set up well.”

O’Neill remarked that food was a new addition to the prom. Many students raved about the dessert tables, with offerings that were beautiful and delicious.

Math teacher Lonnie Mitchell, who has chaperoned many proms, said, “They had a great turnout of students tonight. And, we have more adult assistance than usual. This is the most teachers I’ve ever seen at a prom.”

The students erupted in applause and deafening cheers when Principal Mike Kapolka announced Ben Vanneste as Prom King.

Shivani Rana and Sarah Myers shared the title of Prom Queen when the vote resulted in a tie. Teacher Andrea Bareis, prom advisor, said, “Ben is so awesome, he needed a queen for each arm.”
