Back to the Roots will be closing its Main Street location on Oct. 27, but that doesn’t mean the popular restaurant will be gone for good.

“Our lease is up on Dec. 31,” says Jason Povich, one of the owners, and next week’s closing will allow them to clear out the space.

But, this isn’t the end of Back to the Roots, he says, via email from Haiti, “We are in the process of figuring out what we are going to do moving forward here in Chelsea.”

“Our plan is to take Back to the Roots on the road to music festivals this summer such as Bonnaroo and a variety of other festivals across the country, to promote our nonprofit work,” Povich says.

“It is not manageable for us to stay there (in the current space)” but, they are in the process of negotiating space in Chelsea to possibly open another storefront in the near future, he says.

He and Jason Bendinelli plan to “put more focus on the four Jets Pizza stores, as well as their humanitarian projects in both Haiti and in India.”

Back to the Roots will close its doors on Oct. 27 at 4 p.m., Bendinelli said in an email. “We have discussed many great ideas with BTTR we will see what the future holds with that.”

“We are excited for this move and feel this is the best thing for our future,” the owners say, adding, “This decision will result in something very positive in the future.”

The photos show the 25-acre compound at the top of a mountain in Haiti, which will be turned into an orphanage for about 50 children that includes a small medical center.

  1. First my wife and I like going there for breakfast on Saturdays. We will miss it.,

Second how many trinket shops do we need? I wonder if downtown Chelsea is
more for guests than for Chelsea residents. By this I mean customers of The Purple
Rose and The Common Grill browsing The shops. I’d rather have Tom and the
hardware back! Or a full service BAKERY YUM!

  2. Both Jason’s “do” what most of us just talk about. These two guys look at poverty stricken people and put their money where their mouth is, it’s a beautiful thing on so many levels. It’s sad to see the closure but I know they’ll come up with something great…again!

  3. I am crushed! Breakfast at Roots has been one of our most joyful traditions since moving to town.

  4. So glad I was able to take my mom there for breakfast, twice during her visit, the last week it was open. Such a shock to see them locked up on my next visit. They will be missed, but so glad Jet’s is doing well.
