Combined Site Plan for Palmer Event Space Project Gets OK from Chelsea Planning Commission

By Lisa Carolin

The Palmer Event Space was given unanimous approval for a combined preliminary and final site plan by the Chelsea Planning Commission at its May 16 meeting — contingent upon ZBA approval of parking setbacks.

The intent of the project is to create a public gathering space at the location, which will include an elevated stage, landscaping, and numerous trees. The space will be used for the farmers markets, concerts, and more. Construction will begin this summer with the plan to have the site completed by this fall.

The planning commission also unanimously approved the final site plan for the United Methodist Retirement Communities’ Kresge addition.

Tom Covert of Midwestern Consulting described the project as an opportunity to create private care rooms and eliminate semi-private rooms. A second entry point on the west side will be created in addition to the Middle Street entrance, as well as another segment of the greenway. The timeline for the project is from next month through July of 2018.

The planning commission voted to table site plan approval for a parking lot for Chelsea Family Dentistry at 218 S. Main Street based on some legal issues that need to be taken care of according to Chelsea City Engineer Christine Linfield. The commission did, however, approve the concept of the parking lot.
