The Monitor Base Ball Club of Chelsea is having its next home match this Saturday, July 26 beginning at 2 p.m. at Timbertown Park against the Royal Oak Wahoos.

“We’re also making this match our first-ever charity fundraiser match,” said Jon Van Hoek, captain of the team in an email. “We’re going to give it a shot and see how it goes, and hopefully make a charity match an annual tradition, picking a different charity each year.”

Saturday, the team hopes to raise money for Smile Train, an organization that provides free cleft lip and palate repair surgeries for children around the world.

“I want to make it known that there is no obligation to donate at the match on Saturday,” he said. “Our matches are, and always will be, free and open to the public. But if anybody did want to donate, it’s much appreciated.”

The team hopes to raise $250, the cost of a surgery for one child.

“Any amount is fantastic, or even pledging something creative like a dollar for each Monitor run scored. We’re calling it our ‘Tallies for Charity’ match.
