There was a lot of jumping and twisting and hula hooping going on Friday night at North Creek Elementary School at the PTO’s annual fall sock hop.

For parent Natasha Dorer, it was her first PTO event as a volunteer and as more and more children and their parents arrived in the cafeteria, she declared the experience “Very fun, so far.”

Her son, a kindergartener, echoed his mother’s thoughts.

“Thanks to the PTO, this is a great start to the year, a great event that keeps the kids moving with an old school idea of good music and good fun,” said Marcus Kaemming, principal at North Creek.

The sock hop is just one of a number of free family events in the elementary schools that is planned and run by the PTO.

PTO President Aubree Shemwell said the turnout of parents for the first PTO meeting of the year was large. “It was great to see new and eager parents willing to get involved in PTO,” she said.

“I’m excited about the attendance,” Shemwell said.

Attendance at the sock hop was even higher than last year, Kaemming said.

“Getting to dance and getting popcorn” were the highlights for second-grader Camryn Rossi. She said “Happy” was her favorite song of the night so far.

David Leschuk, another second-grader, said he enjoyed the hula hooping and the dancing, which goes hand in hand with his favorite part of the school day — recess.
