Recent obituary: George L. Winans

winans-george-webGeorge L. Winans of Chelsea, age 94, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1922, in Chelsea, MI, the son of Elmer E. and Cora A. (Burkhardt) Winans. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during World War II as a B-24 Bomber Co-Pilot and was honorably discharged in 1945 as Captain.

He was a co-owner of Winans Jewelry store for decades along with his wife, Jeannette. The store was a family business which was started in 1898 by his great-uncle Lewis Winans. George served as Chelsea Village Clerk for 10 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea, Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Merchant’s Association, Herbert J. McKune American Legion Post 31, and the Chelsea VFW Post. George’s greatest love was his family.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea, with Pastor Larry Lyons officiating. A private family and close personal friends interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
