On The Tracks Productions will kick off a new concert series on Wednesday, which showcases regional and national songwriters at The Depot in downtown Chelsea.

The showcases will take place at renovated and historic Chelsea Depot, 125 Jackson St., the first Wednesday of each month from September-May.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. Michigan’s own Joel Mabus with special guest Joel Palmer are the featured performers.

The showcases are a chance to be in an intimate setting where you’ll hear lots of great songs and learn a little something about the art and craft of songwriting.

Lunched by Annie and Rod Capp, both singer-songwriters, On the Tracks concerts will provide audiences with not only great music but also an insight into how a song came to life.

“I’ve asked the artists to talk about the craft (of songwriting),” Capp said. “I’ve asked them to talk about the process; how the song happened. Did it come in an unusual way? Did it take five years to get written? Did it come to them in a dream?”

And because there aren’t enough “good listening rooms” for musicians and audiences, the Capps chose The Depot as their venue.

“After meeting so many terrific songwriters we wanted to offer them a place to showcase their talent,” she said.

The venture was founded to “bring our favorite songwriters to Chelsea by providing a venue to showcase their incredible gifts,” she said.

There is a minimum $15 donation and advance donations are encouraged. No profits are being taken from – 100 percent of the proceeds for each show go to the artists, but there are rental and clean-up costs.

“We have top-notch folks,” she said of upcoming performers, so stay tuned for individual stores about who will perform during future showcases.
