Sylvan planners answer future land use questions

Although the Sylvan Township Planning Commission approved the 2017 Master Plan at its Feb. 23 meeting, discussion about the township’s plan continues.

At the commission’s March 23 meeting, Mark Drow, who owns 13.4 acres of land in the township that’s located south of I-94 and along Old US 12 at the I-94 eastbound exit ramp, asked the commission to clarify Master Plan future land use of his parcels.

Drow asked the commission to consider his property as mixed use with the possibility of building indoor storage with refrigeration.

Planning Commission Chair David Seitz said, “We’re going to have to look at this through a zoning perspective. You come in with an idea and we’ll work with you.”

Seitz said the planning commission recognizes a need to look at uses like storage facilities and where they fit.

Zoning Administrator Carol Konieczki told Drow, “You have two designations for the property-agriculture and low density residential. It needs to be industrial to have a storage facility.”

Several planning commission members along with Konieczki recently attended a medical marijuana workshop. Konieczki said that licensing will begin in December and that the township is not obligated to allow medical marijuana facilities into the township. She suggested an input session with residents and creating a resolution to clarify the township’s position.

The planning commission will be adding a new member at its April 27 meeting to fill the vacancy left by Roy Schmidt. That person has not yet been named.
