WWRA: Plastic bags, can lids, and a new website

Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) is asking residents to please place shredded paper in clear plastic bags rather than including these strips of paper in with their other recyclables.

They request that people do not dump the shredded paper into the drop-off center bins, rather separate the shredded paper into clear bags so they can be easily removed by hand at the recycling facility.

If needed, WWRA will even provide the clear plastic bags.

Shredded paper wreaks havoc with the initial sorting equipment and then flies all over the WWRA facility, so please do not dump shredded paper in the bins or put it in with your other recyclables.

Also, please do not include plastic bags in with your other recyclables because they get caught up in the paper separator, which consists of 24 shafts with 8 rubber “fingers.” Plastic bags literally tear the fingers. To replace the fingers on one shaft costs $1,200, so please remember your tax dollars are wasted when plastic bags are thrown into the recycling.

Residents are also requested to stuff can lids into the cans so they are recycled with the cans rather than getting lost in the glass separation unit.

WWRA is located at 8025 Werkner Road, the phone number is 734-475-6160, and the email address is [email protected].

Please also note that the WWRA website is now live. The address is wwrarecycles.org. And be sure to sign up for the email list to receive the latest news from the WWRA.

  1. How about a little hand bill flyer to each residence about the do’s and don’ts of the recycle program?

  2. Which if any cardboard food containers (like cereal boxes, frozen dinner boxes) are recyclable ? What about pizza box bottoms and pizza tops?
