12 years and counting: Chelsea First United Methodist Church 2nd Saturday free breakfast

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Liza Gray for the information in this story.)

Chelsea First United Methodist Church, located at 128 Park St., is set to begin its 12th year of providing a free community breakfast every second Saturday of the month from September through May from 8:30-11.

The community breakfast was originally conceived as a response to the recession that had gripped country.

Everyone is invited, especially those who might be struggling to make ends meet.  Along with a delicious hot breakfast, the church also provides bags of household products – paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, dish washing soap and detergent for those who might need them.

The original goals for the community breakfast are still important, though perhaps not at pressing as they were in 2008. In addition, these days the church sees the need for a friendly, welcoming place for friends and neighbors to gather.

Our busy lives and our constant connection to phones and media have disrupted the art of enjoying conversation over a meal and meeting new people.

Saturday morning is a great time to practice that old tradition. The church serves a full breakfast – with bacon, eggs, hash browns, waffles, oatmeal, applesauce, fruit, orange juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. A craft table is set up for children to enjoy as adults linger over their coffee.

Dates for September 2019 – May 2020 are:

Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Dec. 14, Jan. 11 2020, Feb. 8, March 14, April 11, May 9

Persons who might like to take part in cooking, or serving the breakfast can contact the church office at 475-8119 for more information.

Donations to help cover the costs of the meal and household products are accepted, but not necessary.
