The Chelsea Area Garden Club will hold its 15th annual plant sale on Saturday, May 11 from 8 a.m.-noon at 222 S. Main St., in the old Palmer Family Ford-Mercury lot in downtown Chelsea.

The sale will open 30 minutes earlier than in previous years.

Thousands of sun and shade plants, including perennials, herbs, wildflowers, ornamental grasses, daylilies and shrubs, will be on sale.  The majority of plants will sell for $5 or less.

“Gardeners are able to buy good quality, healthy plants at reasonable prices,” Mary Randolph, a charter member of the Chelsea Area Garden Club, sais in a press release.

“All the plants are grown locally so the chances are they will grow well in most gardens in Washtenaw County and the surrounding area,” she said.

Randolph, along with Cathy Gillem and Janet Wamboldt, are co-chairs of this year’s sale.

Plants, donated by the club’s more than 60 members, neighbors and friends, are organized by type, including whether they thrive in sun or shade. Club members will be on hand to answer questions and help customers transport purchases to their vehicles.

The plant sale is one of the organization’s two major fundraisers each year. It hosts a garden walk every other year and the next one will be in 2014.

Since 1999, the garden club has given back to the community more than $24,500, including almost $13,600 for plants and materials for civic beautification.

Plant sale and garden walk proceeds also are used for scholarships and grants for community projects, Gillem said.
