A surprise burst of rain meant that dozens of women lining up for the Ladies’ Day event on Friday, Aug. 27, at the Chelsea Community Fair, were allowed to enter the Multi-Purpose Arena early.

Goodie bags were given to everyone along with complimentary breakfast items including coffee, juice, and donuts.

2005 Homemaker of the Year Terry Payton won a gift certificate to Chelsea Bakery.

This year’s theme was, “When Life Gives You Lemons Make Lemonade,” and many of the superintendents as well as attendees were dressed accordingly.

From start to finish, nearly everyone in attendance was the winner of one of the many prizes generously donated by local businesses. Prizes included everything from baskets of pet treats to kitchen wares, jewelry, bird feeders, and gift cards.

Dancers from the Michigan Academy of Dance performed, and Fair Queen Maddie Welshans introduced and performed with all of this year’s fair queen contestants.

Mary Tobin announced the 2021 Chelsea Fair Homemaker Awards, and the honorees came on stage to accept their plaques, sashes, corsages, crowns, and tote bags.

The 2021 Champion Homemaker was Sue Drew, a Dexter resident, and also the Champion Homemaker 20 years ago in 2001.

Homemaker Runner-up was Katie Wickman, an 18-year-old senior at Chelsea High School and a fair queen candidate.

Avery Beeman, 15, and a sophomore at Grass Lake High School, was named the 2021 Champion Junior Homemaker.

Junior Homemaker Runner-up was Kierstin Norris, a 16-year-old junior at Grass Lake High School and also a fair queen candidate.
