Chelsea Human Rights Commission Approves Bylaws

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission approved updated bylaws at its April 7 meeting via Zoom. The bylaws must now be submitted to Chelsea City Council for final approval.

Changes and additions to the bylaws include that the chair provide notice of a meeting to other members, that city council should have a liaison to the HRC, and that public comment will be allowed at both the beginning and end of meetings.

City Council liaison Tony Ianelli shared feedback from city council at the meeting, and reminded HRC members that the HRC plays a limited role in anything actionable and cannot create its own mission.

Also discussed was the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) virtual training session which is on May 20 from 12-4 p.m. It’s designed for anyone on the City of Chelsea staff and commissions. The session was approved by city council at a cost of $1,000 and is open to a maximum of 50 people.

The next regularly scheduled HRC meeting is on Wednesday, May 5, at 7 p.m.
