Amanda Garber Appointed as Chelsea Acting City Manager

Amanda Garber, current administrative director, was unanimously chosen as Chelsea’s Acting City Manager during a special meeting on Jan. 26.

The decision follows the retirement of John Hanifan, effective Jan. 31, who announced his decision earlier this month after guiding the city’s day to day operations for more than 14 years.

Garber, who was hired by the city in 2018, will begin the interim position on Feb. 1. Her additional compensation and a new contract will need to be negotiated.

One of her first tasks will be to develop a request for proposals for outside firms to assist the city in finding and hiring a new city manager.

In addition, the City Council approved a transition team to assist Garber that will consist of the acting city manager, city department heads, the mayor and one additional City Council member.

To give Garber a little more time to adjust to her new position and put together the city’s annual visioning session agenda, the City Council voted to push back the date of its annual visioning session from Wednesday, Feb. 9 to Wednesday Feb. 16.
