The Chelsea American Legion Post 31 is planning a military memorial service and luncheon to honor the life of Thomas “Tommy” Franklin.

The service will take place at the Legion Post, 1700 Ridge Road in Sylvan Township on Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.

Franklin, 83, died on Dec. 31, 2012. He was a long-time member of the Legion Post, served as its commander multiple times, in addition to serving as chaplain. He was also a member of the Post Honor Guard.

Franklin was an Army paratrooper in the 11th Division and ended his military service with a rank of PFC. After he was drafted, Franklin served from 1950-52.

His was predeceased by his son, Raymond, and is survived by a sister, Winona (Franklin) Landwehr and a brother-in-law Duane Landwehr.

“Tommy was well known in the community and will be greatly missed,” said Craig Maier, financial officer of the post.

Because of Franklin’s involvement with the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, Post 31 got involved, supported and served the needs of fellow veterans at the hospital, Maier said.

“He was a darn good Legionnaire,” said Commander Tom Zatkovich.

Those who would like to attend the service and lunch are encouraged to bring a dessert.

The post will purchase a memorial brick at Veterans Park in his honor.
