American Legion Post 31 Winter Carnival cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions

After celebrating the 50th annual Winter Carnival last year, Chelsea American Legion Post 31 won’t be holding the 51st edition – due to the state’s strict gathering protocols because of COVID-19.

Normally held the first full weekend in February, the winter weekend has typically offered folks a chance to compete in the annual fishing derby on Friday afternoon followed by some card playing during the annual euchre tournament  while gathering in the warmth of the Legion Hall for a full menu of meals and drinks.

Then on Saturday, the annual fishing derby continued and at night, the adults filled the Legion Hall to listen to a band and dance the night away.

Sunday’s events have been geared toward kids age 12 and under where there was a special kids carnival offering the younger members of the community a chance to play games, show their artistic talents, eat lunch and have a few snacks.

Legion Commander Howard Flintoft said organizers held off making the final decision as long as possible and is disappointed that the annual event must be cancelled. But, the veteran’s group plans to hold the event in February 2022 and invites everyone to stop by and join in the fun.

Flintoft also reminded the community that like last year, the annual July 4 chicken broil fundraiser will take place outside on the Legion property at 1700 Ridge Road in Sylvan Township.
